As a preface to the spring Focus Residency, Folk Tales, curated by violinist Arnaud Sussmann, Patrick Castillo returns to lead another Behind the Music session on May 2. The evening will explore the unusual instrumentation of two violins and a viola ahead of the subsequent evening’s concert program. How have composers dealt with the absence of a cello? What choices do Dvořák, Ysaÿe, Taneyev, and Kodály make to complete the harmonic texture? Audiences will also take a closer look at the use of folk elements, with live musical illustrations provided by Pamela Frank, Arnaud Sussmann, and Paul Neubauer.
