Artist Bio

Lucas Chen, cello

Lucas Chen, 18, is a rising sophomore studying computer science and cello performance through the Columbia-Juilliard Exchange Program. He holds 1st-prize awards from the United States Open Music Competition, New York Young Virtuoso Competition, and the American Protege International Concerto Competition, 2nd-prize awards from the ENKOR International Music Competition, Burlingame Music Competition, and United States International Music Competition, and concerto solo performances from the Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra and The Harker School. He has performed and studied at festivals including Music@Menlo and the Meadowmount School of Music and has been invited to the Bowdoin and Aspen Music Festivals. Lucas has performed in masterclasses for luminaries including Matt Haimovitz, David Finckel, Natasha Makhijani, Donna Weng Friedman, Tien-Hsin Cindy Wu, Shai Wosner, Christopher Costanza, Eric Chin, and the Míro Quartet, and he has studied chamber music under Susan Bates at Young Chamber Musicians, Benjamin Simon at the Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra, and Muneko Otani at Columbia University. He also formerly served as principal cellist for both the Harker School Orchestra and Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra, and he has performed at notable venues including Levi’s Stadium and Carnegie Hall. Lucas currently studies with Darrett Adkins, and his previous teachers include Jihee Kim and Jonathan Koh.
