Cheng “Allen” Liang, cello

Taiwanese cellist Cheng “Allen” Liang (25) has performed the Dvořák Cello Concerto in B minor with the Eastman Philharmonia (2020). A two-time winner of the Chimei Arts Award, he is currently pursuing his DMA at the CUNY Graduate Center under the tutelage of Mark Steinberg. He has previously studied with Paul Watkins at the Yale School of Music (MM 2023), Steven Doane and Rosemary Elliott at the Eastman School of Music (BM 2021), and Clive Greensmith at the Colburn Music Academy. Allen has competed in the Lillian and Maurice Barbash J.S. Bach String Competition as one of the three finalists (2022). Besides his enthusiasm in cello, Allen also enjoys composing and arranging music. He has performed his Suite for Cello and Piano (2023) and Three Pieces for Solo Cello (2024) in recent recitals, and the Yale Cello Ensemble has performed several of his arrangements.

Allen has attended numerous festivals, including the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, the Taos School of Music, the Ashkenasi/Kirshbaum Chamber Music Seminar and the regular program of the Heifetz International Music Institute, Music@Menlo, the Taipei Music Academy & Festival, the Sarasota Music Festival, the Meadowmount School of Music, and the Bowdoin International Music Festival.
